Government Forms Recommendation Committees for Transitional Justice and Central Bank Governor

Kathmandu: The government has established a recommendation committee for the appointment of the Chairperson and members of the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The cabinet meeting held on Monday formed the committee under the leadership of former Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra. According to Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung, the committee includes the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission or a designated representative, former Attorney General Khamma Bahadur Khati, Arjun Karki, and Stela Tamang.

The formation of the committee follows discussions among top leaders of Nepal's three major political parties regarding transitional justice. As per legal provisions, the government must establish a committee to recommend officials for these commissions. The Chairpersons and members of both commissions are to be recommended within two months of the committee's formation.

Additionally, the cabinet has formed another committee under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel to recommend a candidate for the position of Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank. Former Governor Bijaya Nath Bhattarai and economist Bishwo Poudel are members of this recommendation committee.

Meanwhile, the government has decided that a high-level delegation led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will represent Nepal at the sixth BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, from April 1-5. The delegation will also include Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, Minister Gurung informed.
